The Saint Andrew Society of Western Australia

The Saint Andrew Society of WA, the largest and most successful of the Scottish- Australian groups in Western Australia, is celebrating the 70th anniversary of its founding in 2008. The majority of the Society's members are Scots or of Scottish descent, but membership is open to anyone who has a connection with Scotland or who has a genuine interest in furthering the Society's objectives. The objectives of the Society are: To encourage the meeting of Scots and others interested in Scotland and Scottish culture. To encourage and foster Scottish dancing, singing, literature and other cultural activities. To make contact with Scots visiting or working in Perth and its surrounds. To support other Scottish cultural institutions. To encourage the wearing of highland dress. However, the main objective of the Society is to ensure that Scotland's vibrant dancing and singing culture is maintained, celebrated and enjoyed in Western Australia. That is accomplished by holding a variety of functions throughout the year. The main ones are: Burns Supper: Held each year on Robert Burns' birthday (25 January), to celebrate the life and work of Scotland's most famous son. Ceilidhs: A ceilidh is a Scottish party with dancing and singing, at which guests are encouraged to make a contribution. There are three ceilidhs each year, the Chieftain's Ceilidh, in May, the Xmas in July Ceilidh, and the Spring Ceilidh, usually held in September. The St Andrew's Day Ball: Our annual celebration of Scotland's national day, held on a Saturday as close as possible to St Andrew's Day (30 November). Arguably the biggest Scottish event held in Western Australia, the St Andrew's Day Ball includes a full program of Scottish dancing and entertainment and is the Society's most important event each year.
