We have created a page for every Clan and armigerous family officially recognised by the Lord Lyon and linked to them the names most commonly associated with each. We have also identified some major Family organisations which are not officially recognised, but which have an active organisation and would be pleased to hear from you.
Generally, names beginning with Mac or Mc are located under the next letter, e.g. MacNeil is under 'N', Mcdonald is under 'D'. All spellings are those officially recognised by the Lord Lyon. Please note that MacKintosh is under 'K' as that is how the name is officially registered. Not all spelling variations are listed, so please select the one nearest to your own. There is no particular significance to how your name is spelt. A 'Mc' spelling does not necessarily mean an Irish rather than Scottish derivation. Members of the same family often took variant spellings to differentiate their own line. Many spelling variants occurred when names were written down, as heard, particularly at immigration ports, or enlistment stations, and that variant has been retained.
Sometimes one name is associated with several clans and your correct connection will depend on your own family history. Where a name is associated with a clan, but also has an active organisation in its own right, both links have been shown.
